European Bike Week 2010
Fun in Faak!
Faaker See in Austria once again came alive with an ambience that is synonymous with Europe’s biggest bike festival and one that can only be European Bike Week. Unfavourable weather conditions may have marked the opening of this legendary event, but a moist beginning certainly didn't dampen the spirits of the 100,000 visitors who did a splendid job of bringing the most infectious party atmosphere to the region of Carinthia this September.
Faaker See and its surroundings enjoy a constant rumble each September as more than 70,000 motorcycles descend on the region to experience the stunning mountainous scenery, great biking roads and to party, Harley-Davidson style!
Harley-Davidson couldn’t have chosen a better platform from which to launch the new range of 2011 models, and a new-look Expo area felt the footsteps of thousands as they tried out the new bikes for size – literally – as the Fit Shop helped tailor bikes to riders of all shapes and sizes using a range of detatchable handlebars, seats and footpegs. The ever-popular My Dream Harley interactive stand also drew the crowds – if you haven’t downloaded your photo yet, visit www.me-on-a-harley.com
And the Harley-Davidson experience didn’t end there – more than 850 visitors took advantage of a free demo ride from its new location, not only trying a new 2011 model, but using the opportunity to explore the beautiful roads and countryside this region has to offer.
The sun finally arrived Thursday evening and continued to shine for the rest of the event, including Saturday's parade as more than 25,000 bikes joined together for the ride to Finkenstein, through Villach to Ossiacher See and Rosseg.
The result of the bad weather on the ground in the customiser area may have postponed Friday's Custom Bike Show, but thousands turned out on Saturday evening to enjoy one of the best bike shows the event has ever seen. Rescheduled to neatly fit around the parade timing, the show attracted entries from some of Europe's finest bike builders. Taking the coveted prize of Best Modified Harley, and a trip to Sturgis to compete at the World Championships in 2011, was Thunderbike from Germany. As the sun set on the show, the prize giving and presentation served as the perfect warm-up for the final night of partying.
The evening entertainment was provided by a varied music line-up that included the ever-popular Queen on Fire, The Big Dig, The Mods Band, Thunderballs and Never the Bride alongside operatic trio, Tenors Unlimited and many other tribute acts.
Taking home a Harley-Davidson Rocker C in the 'buy a pin, win a bike' competition was Nils Kolhampt from Italy. A visitor to European Bike Week for the past six years, Nils, who currently owns a V-Rod, was right in front of the stage when the winning number was drawn! It really does go to show that dedication and commitment really does pay off!
We hope to see you all next year, September 6-11, 2011!
